Just saw: $BILL 15-minute futures open interest rose 7.62%, with open positions valued at about $3.91 million; price was up 3.23% over the same period.
People often ask how to interpret open interest. Here’s how I think about it.
Open interest is generally tracked separately for each contract. Here, this refers to positions in Binance USDT-margined perpetual futures, not the total across all platforms.
A price rise with falling open interest is generally interpreted as short positions closing out; a price drop with falling open interest is often seen as long positions being stopped out. These are rules of thumb, not definitive conclusions.
Leave room to maneuver with futures positions, and don’t let one sudden move wipe you out.
