In the great L2 shakeout, Nillion has turned around and shut down its L2 to move to Ethereum! What a slick move! How can you seize this opportunity with Nillion?

Things have been rough in the L2 space lately. Blast and Abstract have both announced they’re shutting down. No matter how high the TVL, they can’t escape the fate of “high maintenance costs and no differentiation.” Vitalik has said it plainly: simply being cheaper than Ethereum is no longer enough. The next phase is all about delivering unique value.

Nillion announced at this very moment that it was shutting down its L2 and migrating entirely to Ethereum mainnet. Many people’s first reaction was: “Is it over? Are they pulling the plug?” The team quickly clarified: It’s not dying—it’s evolving. They’re moving Blacklight from L2 to L1 to support their new product, Covenants.

What makes Covenants so powerful? Traditional DeFi automation relies either on centralized bots (which can go rogue or go offline at any time) or on-chain transparency (leaving it exposed to front-running and targeted attacks).

Covenants lets you seal your strategies: stop-loss orders, conditional orders, and Agent instructions are all encrypted on-chain, and only decrypted and executed when the conditions are actually met. Nodes use threshold secret sharing and identity-based encryption, so no node below the threshold can see the complete contents.

This directly solves the biggest awkwardness in confidential computing: “Trust me, it ran in a secure enclave.” The Blacklight verification network has nodes across the network continuously validate TEE attestations, using independent consensus to prove that “the private workload really executed as expected.” It’s an upgrade from “verifiable data” to “verifiable private execution.”

The roadmap is clear, too: Dusk is phase one, bringing condition-gated events to Ethereum; then come Darkfall for cross-chain functionality, Neon for programmable conditions, Aurora for post-quantum security… seven eras, with some serious ambition.

On the eve of AI Agents and crypto markets truly converging, whoever can provide an execution layer that is “both private and trustworthy” stands to reap the biggest rewards. Nillion isn’t trying to build yet another chain; instead, it’s building its product directly in the Ethereum ecosystem. Clear-headed, and a little ruthless
