Give AI a “travel card”: $2 per transaction, $10 in total, for 24 hours. Would you dare?

I’ve been following discussions about the Agent economy lately, and I keep wondering how to give an Agent access to money. Once a model can get things done, we need to know who the Agent is, how much it’s allowed to spend, and who’s responsible if it gets things wrong.

I wouldn’t hand it my credit card, let alone my private keys. If I had to confirm every transaction myself, I’d have to stay right there beside it.

But I read the documentation for @KITE AI 中文 . Its approach is to have you approve a spending allowance, then let the Agent make payments within that authorization.

This “spending allowance” can specify a task summary, a per-transaction limit, a total limit, and an expiration time. You can also restrict merchants and APIs, and revoke it at any time. Once approved with a Passkey, the Agent can make payments on its own within those limits; it stops when the allowance expires or runs out. The official example uses a $2 per-transaction limit, a $10 total limit, and a 24-hour duration. Starting in June, allowances are denominated in US dollars, so Agents don’t have to choose a currency themselves; the merchant determines which stablecoin is used for settlement.

Settlement runs on Kite’s own L1, which is EVM-compatible and based on Avalanche technology. Payments use x402 and settle in stablecoins; making a payment itself doesn’t require $KITE . I can see why this approach makes sense for frequent, low-value API payments, and it also avoids the hassle of pricing things in a volatile currency.

Kite’s October update allows multiple Agents to share a previously approved allowance, removing the need to authorize each one separately.

The wallet setup is clear, too: it uses Privy under the hood, and sensitive actions require an additional Passkey confirmation. That extra layer of confirmation is reassuring.

After reading all this, I’m interested in giving an Agent a small spending allowance. Kite has concrete solutions for verifying identity, approving allowances, and making payments.
