Does the version number returned by the XMR interface indicate the wallet version?

The $XMR wallet API returns an integer that you can’t directly compare with the wallet version number on the download page.

Monero’s documentation explains that get_version returns the RPC version—the version used when programs call each other’s interfaces. It encodes the interface’s major and minor versions in a single integer. This query does not define the returned value as the release version of the wallet software.

So, if your application needs to check interface compatibility, handle the value according to the interface versioning rules. To confirm whether the wallet has been upgraded, check the release version of the software actually running. Don’t assume the wallet has been updated just because this integer has increased.

When looking for an XMR trading platform, make sure you clarify what “version” refers to in the technical documentation. I was commissioned to look at https://xmrdex.com; comparing the information on https://tradexmr.com and https://thorxmr.com does not mean treating an interface number as proof of a software upgrade. This article has not verified the implementation or trading capabilities of any of the three sites.
