Ethereum has two types of accounts: externally owned accounts (EOAs) controlled by private keys, and contract accounts controlled by code.
Honestly, I hadn't noticed this before either: after sending Bitcoin, I found that some of the coins had gone to a new address of my own. That's usually change, not lost coins.
$BTC uses the UTXO model, and the balance shown in a wallet is actually the sum of many unspent outputs.
