US company Marathon Fusion claims to have developed a method to turn mercury into real gold using neutrons generated through nuclear fusion. According to the company's calculations, a 1 GW fusion facility could theoretically produce around 2 tons of gold per year, compared to global annual mining output of about 4,000 tons.

Commercial production remains decades away, as the process requires proving economic viability, scaling the technology, and dealing with radioactive impurities. While technological advances previously impacted the scarcity of lab-grown diamonds, applying fusion to precious metals faces far greater technical and economic hurdles.
