HSBC’s first HKD stablecoin, RedCoin, goes live! 3.3 million PayMe users can pay directly with stablecoins
📌 HSBC website, 10/23: HKD stablecoin HSBC RedCoin (ticker: RCHKD) is available on PayMe starting today. It is regulated by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, redeemable 1:1 for HKD, and fully backed by reserves
📌 CoinDesk/The Block: In the coming days, more than 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to open a stablecoin wallet, make P2P transfers, and pay at 100,000+ merchants. It will be added to the HSBC HK App within the year, where users will also be able to subscribe to tokenized money market funds
📌 HSBC website disclosure: As of 10/24, approximately HKD 80.67 million was in circulation, backed by reserves of approximately HKD 81.67 million, all in cash
📌 Background: Anchorpoint, led by HSBC and Standard Chartered, received one of Hong Kong’s first stablecoin issuer licenses this April. Anchorpoint’s HKDAP has been available to institutions since August
【Viewpoint】
This is a major note-issuing bank putting a licensed stablecoin directly into a daily payment app—a “zero-friction distribution” approach that matters more than simply issuing a coin. Circulation is currently just over HKD 80 million, a very small amount, but the key is distribution: 3.3 million users and 100,000+ merchants. If it gains traction, bank-issued stablecoins could create a divide between “compliant local currencies” and global dollar stablecoins like USDT/USDC. The planned integration with tokenized money market funds means RWA is starting to get a real point of entry for retail users.
【Opportunities/Risks】
✅ Watch: On-chain infrastructure related to Hong Kong stablecoins/RWA, the tokenized fund sector, and developments in cross-border stablecoin cooperation between Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand
✅ Key indicator: RCHKD’s circulation will be disclosed daily; its growth rate in a few weeks will be the real test of demand
⚠️ Risk: The wallets are closed off (transfers between PayMe and HSBC App wallets are not supported), making DeFi access difficult in the short term. HSBC has warned users to watch out for scam coins impersonating “HSBC stablecoins”
⚠️ Broader market: $BTC is around 81,000; ETFs saw large outflows this week, so positive news may not translate directly into token prices
Would you pay with a bank-issued stablecoin, or stick with USDT? How much market share could bank-issued stablecoins ultimately take?
