Tether’s payment of several million dollars has become a line of inquiry for the Senate.

Richard Blumenthal, the top Democrat on the Senate investigative subcommittee, included the matter in its crypto inquiry and demanded answers from Tether: Why did it pay a company founded by Bo Hines, a former White House crypto adviser?

In Washington, several million dollars can be read only one way: paying to buy access.

The key is not the total amount, but the path the money took.

Where the money came from, who received it, and what it was for—these three layers say more about the nature of the payment than the total. The path is what tells us whether it was a purchase or a consulting fee. Until the first two layers are clear, the third is just speculation.

Three questions need answers: Was a service actually provided? Where is the contract? Who signed it?

Can Tether’s written response tie every payment to a specific service or deliverable? If so, it’s just a business transaction; if not, the issue shifts from the amount to disclosure.

After October 22, watch for the breakdown of what Tether received in return in that response.
