$BTC Transfer records often show two output amounts, which can easily be misread as two separate payments.

BTC uses UTXOs, or unspent transaction outputs. Once a UTXO is selected as an input, it must be spent in full; you can't use just part of it. After the recipient output and transaction fee are deducted from the input amount, the remainder is usually returned to an address owned by the sender as a change output. Change is a normal transaction output—not another payment to someone else, and not a transaction fee.

When checking a BTC transfer, it's helpful to look at these separately:

- Recipient output: the amount actually sent to the other party
- Change output: the remaining amount returned to the sender; it belongs to them
- Transaction fee: the difference between the total inputs and all outputs; it won't appear as a separate output

You can't treat all the output amounts shown in a block explorer as payments made to others.
