Friday Close | Leave your emotions on the trading floor

The week is nearly over. At this point, many people tend to do one of two things: either add to their positions because they “can’t bear to go into the weekend with cash on the sidelines,” or chase after after-hours news and stay up late reviewing the market.

I’m more inclined to take a third approach: close this week’s trading journal and leave just three lines—
1) What was my biggest impulse this week?
2) Did I reduce my position or cut losses according to plan?
3) What’s one question I want to think through over the weekend (not my next trade)?

The market will still be here on Monday. If you carry your emotions into the weekend, it’s often your judgment that takes the first hit at Monday’s open.

Quick question: Before wrapping up on Friday, do you usually check your positions first or write in your journal?
