Filecoin’s storage capacity was already in place before prices surged

According to a Dell’Oro report, global data center IT semiconductor and component revenue grew 182% year over year in the second quarter of 2026. This surge was driven not just by increased shipments: the price per bit for DRAM and storage drives more than doubled compared with the previous year. As AI infrastructure pushes up the cost of memory and hard drives, server demand is adding further pressure to prices.

Amid supply shortages, vendors are repricing new chips and storage drives. Storage costs are already climbing sharply—even before model-training workloads are complete.

Consider it from another angle:

Filecoin’s storage capacity was deployed on the network well before this wave of price increases began. Procurement cycles and spot-market premiums have no impact on storage capacity that is already in use. Because its data is content-addressed and verifiable, it is unaffected by quarterly price fluctuations in DRAM and hard drives.

The doubling of component revenue reflects the cost of procuring new hardware, while storage resources already running on the network follow a very different timeline.
