Anthropic could go public as early as mid-November. The $2 trillion valuation investment banks were touting has fizzled, and the market is now discussing an IPO valuation of around $1.5 trillion—about 55% higher than its last funding-round valuation of $965 billion in May this year.
FTX invested $500 million in 2021, initially acquiring a 13.56% stake, which had been diluted to 7.84% by 2024. It sold all its shares during bankruptcy liquidation and ultimately recovered about $1.3 billion, making an actual profit of $800 million.
If it had held on, that 7.84% stake (just an estimate; further fundraising would have diluted it) would theoretically be worth about $117.6 billion at a potential IPO valuation of $1.5 trillion. Imagine how wild that is—this one investment alone could have made enough to buy Binance... but if only.
Before its bankruptcy, FTX exchange had a peak valuation of $32 billion, an $8 billion funding shortfall, and had misappropriated funds worth four times the amount it had raised. With operating leverage that high, it had no chance of weathering the bear market at the time. The moment CoinDesk broke the story about FTX’s balance sheet, its fate was sealed. No one could have acquired it and fixed the problem—but if the bomb had been just a little smaller, Binance might have been able to complete the acquisition, and things could have turned out very differently.
What a shame. Even if SBF had been right about everything, it wouldn’t have mattered once he got liquidated 😂
