Bottom line: At this level, the best move is to write out your plan and wait. BTC has moved sideways for a week between the 20-day and 60-day moving averages. Last week’s three-day rally broke out, only to be completely erased—a classic failed breakout and reversal. Until a direction is clear, opening a position in the middle offers the worst risk-reward ratio.

Data snapshot (live, 2026-10-23)

- BTC $81,601 (24h -0.73%, intraday range $80,989–$82,183), still -35% from its all-time high of $126,080

- ETH $2,402 (24h -0.98%); SOL $104.4 (24h +0.16%)

- My own 4H scan view: Last night’s 20:00 4H candle closed at $81,750, below the lower edge of the six-moving-average cluster ($82,357). The cluster is still intact, but price is now hugging its lower edge—tilting weak in the short term.

Plan A: If it drops, scale in between 74,000 and 78,000

If the consolidation ends with a move down, this is the pre-marked buying zone: start with a small position near 78,000, then buy more as it falls toward 77,000 and 74,000, gradually building both spot and futures positions within this range. The reasoning is straightforward—from the current price, that’s about -4% to 78,000 and -5.5% to 77,000, the first meaningful support zone below this consolidation structure. If you’re holding shorts, this is also a zone to take profit and close out—don’t overstay your welcome.

Plan B: If it doesn’t drop, trade time for room

If it simply refuses to drop and moves sideways here until the moving averages catch up, wait for short-term support to move right up to the price, then open a position with that level as your backstop. The advantage of this approach: the longer it moves sideways, the closer the support line gets to the current price, the smaller your stop-loss becomes, and the better your risk/reward ratio gets. Sideways action isn’t wasted time—it’s helping you reduce risk.

A quick note on ETH

ETH is weaker than BTC, and its key level is around $2,170 on the weekly chart (current price: $2,402, with about -10% downside). If an opportunity comes, it’ll most likely be a quick wick down to the weekly level followed by a recovery. If the wick doesn’t recover, it’s not an opportunity—don’t catch it mid-fall.

Discipline (three rules, more important than direction)

1. Write your plan before the market moves. If you wait until prices are rising to wonder “Is this a breakout? Should I chase it?”, you’re already too late.

2. Keep each trade’s stop-loss within 2%, and only take opportunities with a risk/reward ratio of at least 1:3. Setups like yesterday’s wick into the confluence resistance at the daily moving averages—with a tight stop and high potential reward—are the ones worth taking.

3. Your judgment may be wrong; the market is always right—so have both plans ready: one for a drop and one for no drop.
