a16z Crypto is now a16z Frontier. Is it expanding from crypto into all of frontier tech?
Chris Dixon announced on October 22 that the firm is expanding its investment focus from crypto startups to frontier tech startups.
Don’t rush to call it “abandoning ship.” The announcement is clear: it will keep investing in crypto and keep pushing for sensible crypto regulation.
This is an expansion, not a retreat.
What’s really interesting is the focus: AI-native products, autonomous machines, biomedicine, and new networks that connect people and agents.
Dixon believes blockchain could power transactions between machines—machines paying and settling on their own. It sounds straight out of science fiction.
Of course, these are just investment theses, not products that have already launched. Don’t mistake them for a roadmap.
The fund will be led by Chris Dixon alongside Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, with GPs Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The operating team will continue supporting current and future portfolio companies.
In short: crypto is just the starting point. a16z is betting on the foundational infrastructure of the next decade.
Crypto folks, don’t panic. The table just got bigger, and your chips are still in play.
