Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang pushes back against “2029 memory glut” theory: More memory is always better! Can memory stocks stop falling?
📌 According to CNBC, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said in an interview at GTC Berlin that he doesn’t believe there will be a memory supply glut in 2029. “The benefit of memory is that you can always use more,” he said, adding that HBM will remain in use for many years and data centers will also use large amounts of LPDDR.
📌 Background: In an October 15 column, a South Korean media outlet quoted experts saying memory would enter a “red ocean” in 2029 and the supercycle could come to an end. Along with news of a new architecture from ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), memory stocks have fallen for several consecutive days. On Thursday, Micron fell 6.3% and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 6.72% (Seoul Economic Daily/Reuters).
📌 Asked whether Nvidia would use CXMT products, Huang said, “We’re open to it” (Yonhap/CNBC). The KOSPI fell about 2.5% at one point today, led lower by Samsung (Bloomberg).
【Viewpoint】
The world’s largest memory buyer has personally come out in support of the sector, which could ease near-term fears that the cycle has peaked. But the market’s real concern is the concentrated ramp-up of new capacity in 2028–29 (including from Chinese manufacturers) and whether AI capital spending can continue—Meta’s first-ever negative free cash flow is a warning sign. A CEO’s remarks don’t equal orders; whether the sell-off stops will depend on the data.
【Opportunities/Risks】
✅ Watch next week’s earnings reports from Microsoft/Amazon/Google for capex guidance—the most direct indicator of HBM demand
✅ If the memory supply chain stabilizes, sentiment around AI computing-power-related tokens may also recover
⚠️ Risks: CXMT gaining market share and price wars, deleveraging in tech stocks, and oil at $114 weighing on risk appetite; BTC, around $81,000, is under pressure alongside the Nasdaq
Do you think this drop in memory stocks is an unjustified sell-off and an opportunity, or the beginning of a cycle downturn?
