Starknet’s quantum-resistant L1 study receives 93.52% support: study approved, but that doesn’t mean leaving Ethereum

As of 12:17 Beijing time on October 23, 2026, `#StarknetCommunityBacksQuantumResistantL1Study` ranked 6th on the Binance Square trending list, with 57 Discussing; the corresponding topic page showed approximately 2,329 views and 80 Discussing, and was marked Hot. The real development behind this buzz is that the Starknet community’s seven-day, non-binding vote on whether to explore becoming an independent, quantum-resistant Layer 1 has ended, with 93.52% of the voting power in favor of continuing the research.

But the part of the headline most likely to be misread is this: Starknet has not already left Ethereum, nor will a chain migration be completed today. Starknet's official governance announcement says the vote only authorizes research; if the findings support moving forward, further proposals and governance processes will still be required. STRK remains the native token, no replacement token is planned, and the Ethereum bridge will not automatically close as a result of this vote.

**Why would a “research vote” affect STRK?**

Starknet is currently a Layer 2 on Ethereum. The official community proposal clearly lays out the tension: Starknet can advance post-quantum design in areas it controls, but the bridge and data availability still depend on Ethereum's timeline. Starknet has also previously explained that STARK proofs use hash-based cryptography, and accounts can switch signature verification methods through contract logic; the real challenge lies in the dependencies shared with Ethereum.

This makes the vote an architectural choice, not an ordinary version update: continuing as an L2 would preserve Ethereum's shared security and ecosystem network effects; researching an independent L1 could offer greater autonomy over cryptographic upgrades, but would also raise new questions around consensus, security budgets, liquidity, bridges, and application migration. Supporting research means holders are willing to put these questions on the table; it does not mean they have already been resolved.

**First, let's look at STRK's market reaction**

As of 12:17, Binance STRK/USDT spot was around $0.05329, down about 4.41% over 24 hours, with a range of approximately $0.05241–$0.05667 and 24-hour quote volume of about 10.705 million USDT. Official link: STRK/USDT spot: https://www.binance.com/en/trade/STRK_USDT

STRK/USDT USDⓈ-M perpetual was around $0.05325, down about 4.36% over 24 hours, with 24-hour quote volume of about 80.16 million USDT; open interest was about 490.65 million STRK, and the latest funding rate was approximately +0.000349%. These figures do not yet support the simple conclusion that “the vote's bullish impact has already materialized”: discussion of the topic has increased, but spot and perpetual markets are still down over 24 hours, and perpetual volume is significantly higher than spot volume. The slightly positive funding rate only indicates that longs paid shorts a small funding fee in the current settlement period. On its own, it does not prove that buying has returned, and trading discussions on a topic page should not be mistaken for actual net inflows.

**ETH's role should not be overlooked either**

If Starknet ultimately moves toward becoming an independent L1, what changes is not just STRK's position in the chain ecosystem, but also its relationship with Ethereum in terms of security, bridging, and liquidity. ETH is therefore a related asset to watch, not a second token merely “riding the hype.” Binance ETH/USDT spot link: https://www.binance.com/en/trade/ETH_USDT

My view is that, in the short term, this should be treated as a reassessment of governance and technical direction, not as an immediate price catalyst. What could truly change the valuation narrative is not the 93.52% result itself, but whether subsequent research can answer four questions: where the independent chain's consensus mechanism and security budget would come from; how the Ethereum bridge and data availability would be migrated; whether existing applications and assets would need modifications; and whether STRK staking, fees, and value capture would undergo actionable changes as a result. Chasing the price just because you see terms like “quantum resistance” and “independent L1” risks mistaking authorization to research for a completed migration.

Next, I'll be watching three indicators: first, whether StarkWare and the Foundation publish technical research and a white paper draft as planned; second, whether governance proposes an actionable migration plan rather than remaining at the level of a directional vote; and third, whether STRK spot volume and closing performance can improve sustainably, rather than seeing only a short-term volume spike when the topic gains traction. If research details remain elusive, or the costs of bridging, data availability, and ecosystem migration cannot be explained, the current “post-quantum premium” could fade.
