Why is Ethereum’s smallest unit called wei?
Ethereum’s smallest unit, wei, is generally believed to be named after Wei Dai. 1 ETH equals 10 to the 18th power wei.
New tokens are often named after early cryptographers. Don’t jump on the bandwagon if the name has nothing to do with the project.
The white paper for $BTC cites Wei Dai’s b-money as its very first reference. Currently 81638.01.

I get things wrong too, so don’t take this as advice.
