⚖️ Circle Shareholder Sues Trump and World Liberty: USD1 Pulled Into Lawsuit
According to reports by Bloomberg, Politico, and others, Circle shareholder Joel Greenberg has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington, D.C. The defendants include U.S. President Donald Trump, World Liberty Financial and related entities, as well as special envoy Steve Witkoff.
The plaintiffs’ central allegation is a violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Foreign Emoluments Clause, focusing mainly on two transactions involving the UAE:
🔹 A roughly $500 million deal to acquire a 49% stake in an entity associated with World Liberty
🔹 MGX’s roughly $2 billion investment in Binance, reportedly settled in USD1
The plaintiffs also argue that these arrangements gave USD1 an unfair advantage, harming USDC and Circle shareholders.
To be clear: these are allegations in the complaint, and the court has made no findings. We also haven’t seen the defendants’ full responses yet.
My take: The most direct impact on everyday users isn’t “who wins or loses.” Rather, it’s a reminder that the stablecoin race is no longer just about reserves and liquidity—it’s also about political and legal risks. A stablecoin’s shareholders, counterparties, and regulatory relationships can all become sources of risk.
So if you hold U, rather than getting caught up in taking sides, do two things: know which company issued the stablecoin you hold, and don’t put all your large holdings with a single issuer.
Do you mainly use USDT, USDC, or USD1? Would a lawsuit like this affect your choice?
