The prevailing market narrative right now is: “The Fed is going to cut rates, so risk assets are going to party.” But today, I want to pour some cold water on that idea: rate cuts aren’t automatically bullish for crypto. The key is what kind of rate cut it is.

September’s CPI and PPI both came in well above expectations. PPI surged 1.3% month over month—nearly three times the forecast—with energy accounting for more than 80% of the increase in goods prices. Oil has also just broken above $113 at a particularly bad time, so inflation expectations are unlikely to cool quickly.

If the Fed cuts rates on October 27–28, but the dot plot shows fewer remaining rate cuts in 2026 than markets have priced in, that’s a classic “hawkish rate cut”—a dovish statement with hawkish details. In that scenario, risk assets could easily “rally first, then sell off.” A brief FOMO-driven BTC rally might not even last through a single press conference.

My rule: don’t chase prices higher ahead of the Fed meeting; wait for the dot plot before making a move. The rate cut itself isn’t the signal—the “strings attached” are.
