It’s hard to tell at a glance whether a Meme coin is safe, but “who holds these coins” is public information. Check the holder rankings on a block explorer and spend a few minutes looking them over—you can avoid many obvious risks.
$BONK Half of the tokens were airdropped to the Solana community at launch. Current price: 0.0₅304 (24h -5.88%).
▍What Is Holder Concentration?
Holder concentration refers to how tokens are distributed across addresses. Common metrics include the share of tokens held by the top 10 or top 100 addresses.
The more concentrated the holdings, the greater the price impact when a small number of addresses sell. Conversely, a small number of addresses can also push the price up more easily. This is especially noticeable with Meme coins that already have thin liquidity.
▍Which addresses should be excluded first
The top holders are often not “whales”: liquidity pools, burn addresses, exchange wallets, and vesting contracts can all rank near the top. Before calculating whale concentration, exclude these addresses first.
Some token launch platforms list the top holders and the issuer’s holdings directly on their token pages. You can compare these with a block explorer.
▍Hidden concentration
The same party may split its tokens across a batch of new addresses, making holdings look less concentrated at a glance. In that case, check the transfer history: if multiple addresses received funds from the same source and bought in at the same time, they’re often connected.
Addresses that use bots to buy ahead of others in the first few blocks after trading opens are often called “sniper” addresses. When a new token is heavily sniped, the price may already have been pushed up significantly by the time ordinary users enter.
▍Distribution doesn’t necessarily mean safety
Tokens like BONK, which airdropped half of their supply to the community, may have relatively dispersed holdings at launch. But airdrop recipients paid almost nothing for their tokens, so a wave of coordinated selling can still create significant sell pressure.
Large holders transferring tokens to an exchange is often seen as a possible sign of selling, but they may not sell right away. Don’t draw conclusions from a single transfer.
▍In summary
Holder concentration is just one factor. It can help you spot obvious risks, but it can’t prove that a token is safe. Size your position according to what you can afford, and leave yourself plenty of room to exit.
