Section One · The Tide Is Constant

Between heaven and earth, only the tide remains constant. Drawn by the moon, it rises; as the moon recedes, it ebbs. Unchanged through the ages, it never falters across countless generations. To watch the tide is not to watch the water, but to watch its force. Water has form, but its force has none; water can be touched, but its force can only be felt. Those who perceive its force do not chase the waves—the waves follow them.
