BTC is chopping around the $81,500 level right now.
$81,500 isn’t just any old level—it’s the average cost basis for U.S. spot BTC ETFs (reported by cryptonews.net on October 22).
The biggest institutional buyers in the market are all being put to the test at their cost basis: hold above it, and it’s the “institutional consensus zone”; break below, and a huge chunk of ETF holdings goes underwater, with a wave of redemptions knocking at the door any minute.
Bitfinex Alpha laid out the script plainly in its Wednesday report: ahead of the Fed’s October 28 rate decision, BTC is likely to chop between $81,300 and $84,400.
A break above $84,400 would put a breakout in play; fall below $81,300, and the next stop is the October 15 low of $79,821—the invalidation level is marked on the chart.
The macro picture isn’t helping either: at the U.S. market open, the S&P 500 was down 1.3%, the Nasdaq was down 2.3%, and the 10-year Treasury yield was nearing 5%. Money was hiding in bonds.
BTC followed suit, falling 3.5% to $81,272 (pulled live from CoinGecko)—not exactly a surprise.
What stings even more is the Kalshi betting market: the odds of BTC making a new all-time high by mid-January 2027 are down to just 3%.
I think trying to read the charts at this level is a waste of time. This is about sentiment—the ETF cost basis is the biggest psychological line in the sand right now.
Until October 28, bulls and bears are just squabbling over small moves. The real action comes when the Fed speaks.
Which do you think BTC will break first: $84,400 or $81,300?
