⚠️ Trading Nvidia and gold with USDT is great, but RWA perpetuals have lost $50M+ this year with not a single smart contract vulnerability

RWA perpetuals (perpetual contracts that let you trade U.S. stocks, gold, and the Nasdaq around the clock, 7 days a week, using USDC) have been getting a lot of attention on social media lately. Here are a few widely shared figures from X:

🔹 X user Michael Sixgods compiled data showing that RWA perpetuals have about $18.7 billion in open interest, up roughly 17% over 30 days. U.S. stocks account for about $9.1 billion, or around half; decentralized platforms have a 30.6% share, with the rest still on centralized exchanges.
🔹 One user cited a Bitwise report stating that Hyperliquid saw about $261.5 billion in non-crypto perpetual trading volume in Q3, accounting for 36.5% of its total perpetual volume.

But another post is even more worth looking at. On October 21, security firm QuillAudits posted that RWA perpetuals had lost over $50 million in 2026, despite there being “zero smart contract vulnerabilities”:

🔹 Ostium: about $23.75 million. The cause was a compromised price signer that pushed price reports with “future timestamps.”
🔹 AFX Trade: about $24.15 million. The cause was an issue with the custody cross-chain bridge keys; the trading engine itself was untouched.

My take: crypto perpetual prices come from on-chain sources and exchanges, while RWA perpetual prices have to be “brought in” from off-chain. The real risks are who provides prices when the U.S. stock market is closed or during weekends, who signs those prices, and where the collateral is held. Passing a smart contract audit doesn’t mean your funds are safe.

If you’re considering trading these, at least check three things first: who provides the price data, how signing and custody keys are managed, and how prices are calculated during market closures. And don’t size your positions the way you would when trading BTC.

Would you trade U.S. stocks or gold using on-chain perpetuals? Do you care more about being able to trade 24/7, or are you more worried about price feeds and custody failures?
