A Round Number Without a Crowd
A shop has a queue out the door, but the cashier says only a handful bought anything. That's how ETH's brief climb above $2,500 looked to me.
The headline is real. ETH touched the level on Wednesday for the first time in over a week, with a 24-hour high near $2,527 before slipping back to about $2,430 on Thursday. But the move came alongside tech stocks. The Nasdaq rose 1.3% as SpaceX shares jumped 10% on results, per FXStreet. Of $53.7M in ETH futures liquidations, $43M were shorts. That's a squeeze, small in dollar terms, not a stampede.
What doesn't fit is the fund data. US spot ETH ETFs logged net outflows on 15 of the last 16 trading days, including $26.13M on Tuesday, per SoSoValue figures cited by FXStreet. The regulated, long-only buyers weren't the ones pushing.
Here's the connection I keep returning to. Staking hit a record 43.8M ETH, about 35.9% of supply, per Bitwise, and a related FXStreet piece is headlined that yield and fee revenue fell. A larger locked share means a thinner liquid float, and thin floats let modest leveraged flows move price. That's my inference. The sources don't link the two.
I can't tell whether the record staking reflects conviction or just habit, and one day of price action proves little.
My reading: $2,500 tells you where shorts got hurt, not who is accumulating. I'd want ETF flows to turn before calling it demand.
