⚡ Solana’s biggest upgrade ever, Alpenglow, goes live: confirmation time cut from seconds to around 150 ms, but the price hasn’t bought in yet. $SOL is trading at about $104, down 2.2% over 24h
📌 What happened (according to CoinDesk)
• Activated Wednesday, marking the biggest network change since 2020
• Validators send votes directly to one another and aggregate them into certificates; blocks become final after 1–2 rounds of voting
• The handover takes about 900 ms, with 446 of 654 validators voting to certify
• Wallets, fees, and apps remain unchanged
👀 Two points that are easy to misread
1️⃣ 150 ms is a target under normal network conditions, not a guarantee for every payment
2️⃣ Votes are no longer counted as on-chain transactions, so TPS and transaction counts on explorers and dashboards will drop sharply—that’s a change in how they’re counted, not a sign that on-chain activity has cooled
🧠 My take
This is good news for faster exchange deposits and instant settlement of stablecoin payments for merchants, with a narrative focused on payments and high-frequency trading. But a technical upgrade doesn’t mean an immediate price rally: BTC has just pulled back from $85,000 to around $82,000, the Fear & Greed Index is at 68 (greed), and overall risk appetite is being weighed down by a pullback in AI stocks. $SOL is still hovering around $105.
