$NEAR is absolutely crushing it on the news front:
The HSP-029 governance vote kicks off this week, proposing to cut the maximum annual inflation rate from 2.5% to 1.6%, phased in linearly over 24 months. The numbers work out to 11.8 million fewer tokens minted over two years and 66.1 million fewer over six. After the news broke, the token price rose 5% yesterday to $5.02. Bitwise’s NEAR spot ETF drew in $2.61 million in a single day, bringing cumulative inflows to $83.05 million. The deflationary narrative is in full swing.

But stakers are devastated: annualized yields would fall from 5.27% to 3.37%, cutting their income by nearly a third. And the validators who got their seats through the support program are up for reassessment, out of 406 validators. Plus, the November 2 vote deadline is only the first step—an upgrade to the protocol and a 90-day cooling-off period are still needed before it takes effect. This is a slow-burn play.

What stings even more is that this isn’t an original idea: Solana’s SGP-0002 was already approved in August, passing with 67% of staked voting power. NEAR is basically copying the homework.

So NEAR holders are split into two camps:
A. The deflation camp: Less issuance means more long-term value. Who cares about earning a little less interest?
B. The yield camp: Annualized returns are getting nearly halved, and we have to wait two years. Isn’t it better to have liquid funds?

Which side are you on? Sound off in the comments.
