Zcash NU7: Blocks Drop From 75 to 25 Seconds, Mainnet Eyed for Nov. 5 #Zcash #ZEC
Zcash developers have settled on November 5 as the target date for the NU7 mainnet upgrade, and the most noticeable change is faster blocks.
NU7 cuts the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. For anyone waiting on a couple of confirmations, such as shops, exchanges, and bridges, that’s roughly a two-thirds reduction in wait time. Using the 75-second and 25-second targets, two confirmations drop from about 150 seconds to about 50 seconds.
Other changes:
Halvings stay. Holders voted 98.9% in favor of keeping the halving schedule. Version 4 transactions are disabled. A Network Sustainability Mechanism is added. It’s designed to keep the halving schedule intact while funding network security over time. No new transaction formats. Developers say most wallets shouldn’t need major changes. Full nodes, indexers, and block explorers may need adjustments.
The timeline so far: the upgrade went onto public testnet in early October, and mainnet activation depends on how that testnet run went. November 5 remains a target, not a guarantee.
What I’m watching:
The final mainnet activation height. That’s the confirmation that the November date is locked in. Whether faster blocks change how ZEC is used. Shorter confirmation times could matter most for payments and exchanges. Node operator readiness. If infrastructure lags, the shorter block times could cause problems.
