The EU statistical office released a report on October 21 showing that the Eurozone’s government debt-to-GDP ratio rose to 88.8% in Q2 2026, up from 88.4% in Q1. Meanwhile, the bloc’s fiscal deficit widened from 3.2% to 3.3%, with some of the countries carrying the highest public debt including Greece (140.8%), Italy (139.9%), and France (119.1%).

These figures reflect the increasingly severe fiscal burden in Europe as borrowing costs remain high. The EU-wide fiscal deficit’s sharp rise to 3.5% shows that governments are struggling to rein in public spending without undermining already fragile economic growth.

Mounting public debt will constrain the European Central Bank’s (ECB) policy options while pushing government bond yields higher across the region. This could put downward pressure on the euro and trigger a more cautious mood in traditional risk-asset markets.

In crypto markets, fiscal instability in major economies often encourages investors to seek decentralized assets as a hedge against the depreciation of fiat currencies. Although short-term inflows into $BTC may come under pressure from broader liquidity tightening, the long-term outlook for digital assets remains supported as the global public debt crisis continues.
