Solana’s final confirmation time is being cut from 6 seconds to 150 milliseconds. That number sounds like bragging, but the Alpenglow upgrade is actually live.
This upgrade moves validator voting from on-chain to off-chain, packaging votes into certificates so transactions can be finalized in one or two rounds. In simple terms, exchanges and payment apps no longer have to wait a full 6 seconds before counting deposits, and there will be far fewer awkward moments when prices move before a transaction is finalized. Compared with Ethereum’s full finality of about 13 minutes, $SOL this is a huge leap. Validator costs have also come down: the old system burned about 2 SOL per day on voting, while the new one uses a fixed 0.8 SOL entrance fee per epoch, or roughly every 24 hours, saving about 60%.
The rollout has not gone smoothly. Since the testnet launched in early May, it has been wiped and restarted six times, and one full-network migration failed and had to be rolled back. Fortunately, the testnet does not involve real money. The switch began on Wednesday at epoch 1064, and after a 5,000-slot transition, the actual change landed at slot 459,653,000. $ETH The current price is 2513.68, with the range up 4.81%. Market sentiment is not bad, but what Solana needs to prove this time is that the mainnet can really run at 150 milliseconds, not just produce pretty numbers in a testnet.
My take is that cutting confirmation time to below the blink of an eye is a real user experience improvement for market-making and payment applications, but moving voting off-chain also places more trust on the certificate mechanism. Shipping the upgrade is only the beginning; the real test is whether the mainnet remains stable over time.
