When you increase your leverage, the change will fail if your current position already exceeds the maximum notional value allowed at that leverage.
You can think of the margin ratio as a progress bar toward liquidation: the closer it gets to 100%, the more dangerous things are. To bring it down, add margin or reduce your position.
