Solana’s Alpenglow is now live on mainnet. It’s the biggest overhaul to its consensus layer since 2020, and the team says it can cut finality time by 99%, down to milliseconds.
That’s the key difference in approach: Ethereum scales in phases, refining things gradually on testnets, while Solana replaces the engine outright. It’s faster, but making changes to the consensus layer is a bet that nothing will go wrong.
For everyday users, finality speed comes down to one thing: “Has this transaction actually been confirmed?” If millisecond-level finality proves reliable, the on-chain experience will feel different.
