🚨 A warning for anyone running trading bots: Cloud platform Railway has suffered a security incident, and environment variables may have been exposed
Railway disclosed on October 21 that it detected unusual access to a system storing customers’ environment variables. Its investigation found that an unauthorized third party may have accessed encrypted environment variables, and in some cases also obtained the decrypted contents.
🔹 Deployments are currently paused
🔹 Railway has asked all users to immediately rotate API keys and private container registry credentials stored on Railway, and review logs for related services
🔹 Some developers say they watched their keys being used in real time and received breach alerts from services including Anthropic and Stripe
🔹 Railway believes the attackers were primarily after API keys for AI inference services
Why should crypto users care? For convenience, many people put trading bots, copy-trading scripts, and Telegram bots on platforms like these, with exchange API keys and even wallet private keys stored in environment variables.
My advice: if you’ve used Railway, take these steps now:
1. Delete your old API keys in your exchange account and create new ones—don’t just rename them
2. Give new keys trading permissions only, disable withdrawals, and bind them to an IP allowlist
3. If you stored private keys in environment variables, create a new wallet and move your assets. Don’t wait
4. Review your account’s recent orders and transfer history
Honestly, LiteLLM was compromised and Railway was breached over the past couple of days. Developer tools keep getting hit. When your keys are stored on someone else’s servers, your security isn’t entirely in your hands.
Where are your bots running? Do your API keys have withdrawal permissions enabled? Share your thoughts in the comments 👇
