Earnings night scorecard: Meta’s adjusted EPS beats expectations by 13%; Tesla’s free cash flow turns positive

Meta Q3 (after the market close on Oct. 21 ET; official earnings report): Revenue was $64.601 billion, up 26% year over year and above market expectations of around $6.34 billion; adjusted EPS was $7.40, beating expectations of around $6.50. A $9.89 billion litigation provision dragged operating profit down 37%, and free cash flow also turned negative, at -$2.12 billion. Shares rose 3.4% after hours.

Tesla Q3 (after the close on the same day; TradingKey/Reuters): Revenue was $28.046 billion, broadly in line with expectations; non-GAAP EPS was $0.48, above the expected $0.43. Operating profit was $718 million, down 56% year over year, mainly due to R&D expenses rising from $1.63 billion to $2.761 billion. Free cash flow was $1.531 billion, turning positive from -$1.092 billion last quarter. Shares rose 1.32% after hours to $391.57.

Both companies are spending heavily: Meta on AI infrastructure (raising its full-year capital expenditure guidance to $135–145 billion), and Tesla on robots and Robotaxis (the Cybercab began driverless testing in Austin in September, and Optimus production lines are being set up in Fremont). The market approved this time—one rose 3.4% after hours, the other 1.3%.

In crypto: $BTC was up 2.1% this morning at $84,650, and $ETH was up 1.4% at $2,491. On Binance spot, 58 coins were up and 27 were down. Tesla didn’t sell any Bitcoin this quarter; together with SpaceX, it still holds 30,200 BTC.

Put simply, what the market looks for on earnings night is whether “spending big is translating into growth”—Meta delivered with ad revenue up 26%, and Tesla delivered with its automotive gross margin recovering to 18.5%.

Whose story are you more bullish on for Q4: Meta’s AI or Tesla’s robots?
