In-Depth Analysis of the Ethereum Market: ETF Outflows and Improving Fundamentals Pull in Opposite Directions

I. Price Trend Analysis

As of the evening of October 21, 2026, Ethereum was trading at $2,494, up approximately 1.86% over the past 24 hours. It reached an intraday high of $2,521 and a low of $2,484. On the hourly candlestick chart, the price moved within a narrow range of $2,490 to $2,520, showing an overall pattern of consolidation at elevated levels.

The main support for Ethereum’s latest rebound has come from improving fundamentals. JPMorgan extended JPM Coin settlements to the Ethereum mainnet, while Grayscale opened an in-kind subscription mechanism. These two major institutional developments significantly boosted market confidence in Ethereum. In addition, the amount of ETH staked reached a record 43.8 million, accounting for 35.9% of the circulating supply and effectively tightening the tradable supply in the spot market. During the trading session, net buying briefly exceeded $85 million, pushing the price up from $2,449 to $2,515 before it entered a period of consolidation at elevated levels.

However, Ethereum spot ETFs have seen cumulative net outflows of more than $1.08 billion in October, setting a record for the largest monthly outflow and completely erasing September’s gains. This contrasts sharply with strong inflows into Bitcoin ETFs, reflecting a divergence in institutional investors’ allocation preferences between the two major crypto assets.

II. Technical Indicator Analysis

Looking at the moving average system, the 7-hour moving average stands at $2,503, the 25-hour moving average at $2,470, and the 99-hour moving average at $2,424. The three averages are aligned in a bullish formation, with the price trading above them, indicating a bullish short-term trend. The exponential moving average system also confirms the bullish setup: the 7-hour EMA stands at $2,496, closely tracking the current price.

For the MACD, the DIF line is at 17.65, the signal line at 16.76, and the histogram at 0.89. Although the MACD remains above the zero line, the gap between the DIF and signal lines continues to narrow, and the histogram has contracted for several consecutive periods, indicating that upward momentum is fading rapidly. If the histogram turns negative, it could trigger a short-term pullback.

For the RSI, the 6-period RSI has fallen from its previous high of 88.45 to 63.13. The 12-period RSI is at 65.37, and the 24-period RSI is at 62.84. The short-period RSI has retreated from overbought territory into a neutral-to-strong range, suggesting that short-term overbought pressure has eased somewhat, though there is still room for further downside.

For the KDJ indicator, the K value is 62.99, the D value is 68.30, and the J value is 52.36. The K line has crossed below the D line, forming a death cross, while the J value has fallen to around 50, making the short-term bearish signal fairly clear. The Stochastic RSI is at 32.14, in the lower range, indicating weak short-term momentum.

For the Bollinger Bands, the upper band is at $2,524, the middle band at $2,474, and the lower band at $2,422. The price is trading between the middle and upper bands, but failed to break through after approaching the upper band. It may pull back toward the middle band to seek support in the short term.

The 14-period ATR is 17.60. Volatility continues to contract, and the market may be approaching a directional breakout.

III. Market Sentiment Analysis

Across 15 quantitative factors, 10 give bullish signals and five give bearish signals, leaving the bulls with a clear advantage. However, the composite indicator currently gives a bearish signal, with a historical win rate of 63.83%, suggesting that the short-term bearish signal is relatively reliable and investors should remain vigilant.

In terms of market sentiment, Ethereum is caught between positive fundamental developments and negative flows. On the one hand, institutional adoption continues to deepen, record staking levels are tightening the circulating supply, and on-chain activity remains healthy. On the other hand, record ETF outflows and the ongoing overhang of selling by the Drift Protocol hacker are putting substantial pressure on the price. The Drift attacker recently transferred more than 44,500 ETH, worth approximately $109 million, through Tornado Cash. The attacker’s wallet still holds around 56,500 ETH, which could be sold at any time.

Three risks warrant attention: first, structural selling pressure from continued redemptions of spot ETFs; second, the potential risk of further selling of the Drift hacker’s remaining ETH; and third, the possibility of a pullback after the price encountered resistance near its previous high. If Ethereum can hold firmly above $2,500 with rising trading volume, it may have room to extend its gains. Conversely, if it breaks below the middle-band support at $2,470, it could retest the $2,450 level in the short term.
