Zcash NU7 activation block merged: 3,543,405 finalized—or has the price already priced it in?

At 05:26 Beijing time on October 22, 2026, `#ZcashDevelopersConfirmNovemberDateForNU7Upgrade` ranked No. 2 on Binance Square’s live Trends chart, with about 623 discussing it. The story has advanced since yesterday: PR #1405 in Zcash’s official ZIPs repository has been merged, and ZIP 259 specifies mainnet activation at block height 3,543,405, expected to be reached around November 5.

First, distinguish “merged” from “live.” NU7’s target block interval will drop from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, reducing the theoretical wait for three confirmations from about 225 seconds to about 75 seconds. It will also introduce a new network sustainability mechanism, remove the immediate circulation of some transaction fees, and invalidate v4 transactions. Mainnet activation will still occur at a block height, not at a fixed time that has already arrived. Node software and infrastructure readiness to support that height remain things to watch going forward.

One point that especially needs to be flagged is Sprout. Official ZIP 259 states that Sprout transfers can only be represented using v4 transactions; after NU7 activates, funds still in the Sprout pool will be unspendable. This is a deadline risk for legacy-address migration and wallet infrastructure, not a requirement for ordinary ZEC held on exchanges or in modern Sapling/Orchard addresses to take action. For nodes, wallets, indexers, and transaction services, upgrade compatibility matters more than the headline claim of “25-second blocks.”

For market data, start with the [ZEC / USDT spot trading page](https://www.binance.com/en/trade/ZEC_USDT?type=spot). At the 05:26 snapshot, ZEC spot was around $1,355.15, up about 8.576% over 24 hours, with a range of $1,241.33–$1,368.40 and quote volume of about 250.8 million USDT. The latest completed four-hour candlestick, covering 00:00–04:00 Beijing time, closed at $1,357.03, with a high of $1,368.40. The current 04:00–08:00 candlestick has not closed yet, so its intraday high cannot be described as confirmation of a new breakout.

For the leveraged market, see the [ZECUSDT USDⓈ-M perpetual trading page](https://www.binance.com/en/futures/ZECUSDT). The perpetual was around $1,354.32, up about 8.666% over 24 hours, with open interest of about 472,558 ZEC and the latest settled funding rate at about -0.0062%. The perpetual is not trading at a clear premium to spot, and the funding rate is slightly negative; however, its 24-hour trading volume is about 2.04 billion USDT, significantly higher than spot volume. My interpretation is that the market is indeed trading on upgrade expectations, but for now this looks more like event pricing amid high leverage and volatility than sustained spot demand.

For a broader-market comparison, see the [BTC / USDT spot trading page](https://www.binance.com/en/trade/BTC_USDT?type=spot) and the [BTCUSDT USDⓈ-M perpetual trading page](https://www.binance.com/en/futures/BTCUSDT): at the same snapshot, BTC spot was around $84,768.01, up about 2.236% over 24 hours, while the perpetual was around $84,732.00, up about 2.250%. ZEC’s gain is clearly larger than BTC’s, suggesting the upgrade news may have prompted additional repricing of the asset. But correlation does not prove that NU7 itself has created new on-chain demand.

My view is that the PR merge has reduced uncertainty around the date, which had not yet been set, but it has not established that the upgrade will run smoothly. I’ll be watching three things next: first, whether official node software supporting mainnet height 3,543,405 is released; second, whether there are any suspension or compatibility announcements concerning Sprout migration, wallets, and transaction services; and third, whether ZEC spot trading continues after the latest completed four-hour candle closes, rather than being driven solely by perpetual open interest and event sentiment.

If the official software is delayed, infrastructure compatibility issues emerge, or the price keeps rising while spot volume fades and open interest expands rapidly, I would see that as expectations being priced in too far ahead. Conversely, if the software and ecosystem preparations proceed as planned and spot demand holds up after the candle closes, the upgrade expectations would look more like a verifiable improvement in fundamentals. The 25-second target is a protocol parameter, not a promise of returns.
