Understanding ETH ETF outflows starts with checking the measurement period

When ETF fund flows appear contradictory, what is most easily overlooked is often not the direction, but the measurement period.

According to a report by Helen Partz in Cointelegraph on October 21, 2026, citing SoSoValue data, U.S. spot ETH ETFs have seen cumulative net outflows of about $1.08 billion since the beginning of October; as of the time of the report, they recorded net inflows of about $26 million on Tuesday. The report also said that U.S. spot BTC ETFs recorded net inflows of about $23 million on Tuesday. This refers to “since October began,” not the final result for the full month of October; these figures are also relayed from the report and are not based on my independent verification of SoSoValue’s original records. In my view, ETF fund flows can offer a window into institutional allocation demand, but they cannot explain prices on their own or directly predict subsequent gains or losses. The source does not verify the reasons behind each redemption or subscription; attributing them to risk appetite, profit-taking, or asset rotation would be possible explanations, not confirmed facts. Different one-day flows for BTC and ETH do not mean that investors have made a long-term choice.

A more prudent approach is to note the period covered by the data, then see whether flows continue and cross-check them against spot trading volume, derivatives leverage, and fundamental information. A one-day figure is like a snapshot in a weather forecast, not the climate for an entire season. It is fine to look at the data, but do not let one indicator make decisions for you.
