Stablecoins: Coinbase reveals record transfers of more than $400 million per hour

Stablecoins are especially active when U.S. banks are closed. A study by Coinbase and The Block Pro Research shows that 73% of the analyzed volume circulated outside U.S. banking hours in the 12 months ending July 31. In the third quarter of 2026, adjusted transfers reached $891 billion, or more than $400 million per hour on average.

Adjusted transfers reached $891 billion in the third quarter.

Seven of the 10 largest U.S. banks have already tested stablecoins or tokenized deposits.

Stablecoins move more than $400 million per hour

The report has a fairly self-explanatory title: The Always-On Dollar. The idea is simple. Blockchains don’t close at night, on weekends, or during holidays. This availability is already beginning to show up in everyday stablecoin payments. In the third quarter of 2026, Coinbase and The Block Pro Research estimate adjusted transfer volume at $891 billion. In early 2023, it was around $216 billion per quarter.

The market therefore more than quadrupled. Calculated over the entire quarter, that represents more than $400 million transferred every hour. One important detail: this is adjusted volume intended to eliminate some artificial activity, internal transactions, or activity that is difficult to compare with genuine economic transfers. The gross volume recorded on the blockchain can be much higher.
