Solana activates Alpenglow: finality drops from 12.8 seconds to around 150 ms

Anza, the team maintaining one of Solana’s main clients, announced that the Alpenglow consensus protocol has been active on mainnet since Wednesday, October 21, at around 14:00 UTC, at slot 459,653,000. Validators have replaced TowerBFT, which had been in use since the network launched in March 2020 (The Block).

The numbers
→ Finality: from around 12.8 seconds to around 150 ms, or about 85 times faster
→ Confirmation latency expected by users: 150 to 200 ms (Max Resnick, Anza)
→ SOL: around $108.5, up 2.5% over 24 hours

What’s changing: validator voting now takes place off-chain, using aggregated certificates. The network is designed to keep operating if malicious participants control less than 20% of the stake and an additional 20% is offline.

The context: Anza CEO Brennan Watt calls this the most ambitious upgrade since the Ethereum Merge. The design was published in May 2025.

My analysis: the market had anticipated the event, and SOL’s rise remains modest. The real test will be the network’s stability over the next few days and developer adoption. This is a hypothesis, not a forecast.

This is not investment advice.

Do you think SOL’s rise today reflects anticipation, or is it the start of a real trend reversal?
