Bitcoin derivatives: Options near 60% of open interest

According to a market data report dated October 21, Bitcoin options accounted for just under 60% of total open interest in Bitcoin derivatives during the previous week, up from around 50% at the beginning of the year. As of the previous Friday, total reported derivatives stood at about $129 billion, of which approximately $76 billion was in options. Options on U.S. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds totaled around $36 billion, including about $35 billion in IBIT options.

The figures describe outstanding positions, not trading volume or new cash entering the market. Also, a higher share of options alone does not distinguish bullish bets from hedging. Therefore, strike prices, expiration dates, and strategies should be examined before treating the aggregate as a market-direction signal.
