The Hidden Danger of Leverage for the Average Investor
Recently, data from the South Korean market sounded a severe warning: retail investors suffered losses of more than 6.3 trillion won (about US$4.8 billion) on single-stock leveraged exchange-traded products (ETPs) in less than three months.
The promise of multiplying profits with local giants like Samsung and SK Hynix attracted thousands of individual investors. But leverage has no mercy for volatility: when the market corrects, the daily rebalancing of these products irreversibly eats away at investors’ capital.
This phenomenon reflects a global trend. In both traditional equity markets and the world of cryptocurrencies, the pursuit of quick gains through leveraged derivatives often turns a lack of risk management into catastrophic liquidations. Leverage increases exposure, but it never forgives unchecked greed.
My view: Leverage is not a shortcut to wealth; without strict risk management, it is simply an accelerator of bankruptcy.
