The privacy coin veteran is about to pick up the pace: $ZEC ’s NU7 upgrade finally has a firm deadline.

Developer Sean Bowe submitted an activation proposal this week: the mainnet will activate at block height 3543405, which, at the current block-production rate, is estimated to be around November 5. The proposal has received two approvals, and the upgrade dashboard for the Zakura node software also lists that height as the planned activation point.

The most obvious change in this upgrade is that block times will be cut from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, tripling the block production speed. The biggest difference users will notice is the wait for confirmations: exchanges used to require 3 confirmations for a $ZEC deposit, which took nearly 4 minutes; after NU7, that will drop to just over a minute. The testnet has been running for three weeks since early October, and wallets should be largely unaffected.

There are also two easy-to-overlook details. First, the Network Sustainability Mechanism will temporarily remove 60% of transaction fees from circulation in each block. These fees won't be returned to miners as block rewards until February 2031, while the halving schedule remains unchanged. Second, Sprout—Zcash’s earliest privacy system—will be permanently shut down when NU7 activates. Any coins still in it must be moved out before November 5 or they’ll be permanently locked, so holders should take note.

In my view, privacy coins are one of this year’s strongest-performing sectors. $ZEC has already climbed above $1,300, and the upgrade’s positive impact has probably already been priced in. The real thing to watch isn’t “the upgrade happened,” but “whether the network remains stable on upgrade day.” If activation goes smoothly on November 5, it will validate the usability of privacy payments; if something goes wrong, the recent gains could easily be given back.

Are you more optimistic that “the upgrade will go live and deliver on its promise,” or do you think “buy the rumor, sell the news”?
