Watching one long bullish candle after another shoot up on the chart, I forgot all about my original plan to sit on the sidelines. Eventually, anxiety drove my finger to place a market order and chase the price.

Trading is about seeking favorable odds amid uncertainty—not enduring a distorted risk-reward ratio just to relieve the anxiety of “missing the boat.”

FOMO stems from loss aversion. Seeing the market surge while you’re flat can feel just as painful to the brain as taking an actual loss. But mathematically, chasing a rally is a losing bet.

After a sharp price spike, structural support is often far below. Suppose an asset rises from $80,000 to $84,000, with resistance at $85,000 and support at $79,000:
- The upside from chasing the price is (85,000 - 84,000) ÷ 84,000 ≈ 1.19%.
- But the distance to the stop-loss is (84,000 - 79,000) ÷ 84,000 ≈ 5.95%.
- The risk-reward ratio deteriorates to 1:5. You’d need a win rate of 83.3% just to break even, and a single pullback could wipe out multiple gains.

Four practical rules:
1. Never chase with a market order: Place limit orders only on a pullback to support; don’t chase during a sharp rally.
2. Walk away if the risk-reward ratio is below 2:1: Before entering, calculate “upside to target ÷ distance to stop-loss.” If it’s less than 2, pass.
3. Take a 15-minute cool-off: When you think, “If I don’t buy now, I’ll miss my chance,” step away from the screen for 15 minutes and let your emotions settle.
4. Probe with a small position instead of going all in: In a strong trend, start with 20% of your intended position, leaving room to add on a pullback.

According to Binance spot data, BTC is currently at $84,098, near its 7-day high (the 7-day low is $80,209), and the Fear & Greed Index stands at 63. When a breakout seems imminent near the top of a range, it’s often the moment when holders who bought at lower prices look for liquidity to cash out.

There will always be another train. Staying patient until a good entry appears is itself a successful trade.
