🏦 Standard Chartered has brought all of Zodia Custody in-house
On October 21, Standard Chartered (LSE: STAN) announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire 100% of crypto custodian Zodia Custody. Zodia’s shareholders had previously accepted Standard Chartered’s non-binding offer, and this makes the deal official.
A few key points:
🔹 Zodia’s regulated custody business will be integrated into Standard Chartered’s Securities Services division
🔹 It operates across five jurisdictions: Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, the UAE, and Luxembourg
🔹 The software and services business will be spun off as an independent company, Zodia Solutions, under SC Ventures, and will continue serving institutional clients, including Standard Chartered
🔹 The deal price was not disclosed. It remains subject to regulatory approval, and the company says it does not expect the deal to affect existing clients
My take: This is another example of a “bank bringing custody back in-house.” Early on, major banks mostly incubated or took stakes in crypto subsidiaries as a way to test the waters. Now, bringing the business fully onto the balance sheet suggests management sees digital asset custody as a long-term core business, not a peripheral experiment. For institutional investors, having a traditional bank itself as custodian can significantly reduce the burden of compliance discussions.
So, what do you prefer: keeping your crypto with a bank-affiliated custodian, or sticking with self-custody? Let’s discuss in the comments 👇
