Is Monero about to blow up again? I feel like I’ve seen this script before.
The notional value of XMR futures open interest has broken through $300 million again. CoinDesk, citing SoSoValue data, reports 515,730 coins in coin-margined open interest—a five-week high, up from just 400,000 a week ago. The price has just climbed back above $600.
Doctor Profit didn’t hold back: “The last time open interest reached this level was January 2026. Over the next 20 days, Monero fell 66%. I can smell liquidations coming.”
That January, it plunged from 790 to below 300. Same script, not even bothering to change the storyboard.
To be fair, BeInCrypto poured some cold water on the hype too: by CoinGlass’s figures, open interest is now at $287 million. In dollar terms, it still hasn’t topped the $305 million peak from mid-January or the $320 million peak from August–September last year. Coin-margined open interest, though, is already higher than it was in January.
When leverage piles up, there are only two possible scripts: the short squeeze keeps going, or one sharp move wipes everyone out. There’s no middle ground. The privacy coin sector is scorching hot right now, and $ZEC is already at 1,300. Monero is practically telling you outright: leverage here is wound so tight it’s about to spring a leak. If you’re thinking of jumping in, go take a look at January’s candlestick chart first.
