šŸŽ° Pump.fun Called a ā€œCancerā€? The Solana Memecoin Scene Is in an Uproar

Over the past couple of days, a group of Solana meme traders on X have been venting about Pump.fun. Some have gone so far as to call it ā€œcancer.ā€

Their complaints mainly boil down to a few points:
šŸ”¹ Anyone can launch a token with zero barriers to entry—no presale or coding required—and thousands of new coins launch every day.
šŸ”¹ According to statistics, 79% of coins only see trading on their first day. By the second day, nobody cares.
šŸ”¹ Sandwich bots have siphoned millions of dollars from retail traders.
šŸ”¹ Coins shilled by KOLs crash quickly. Very few actually take off, and turning 5k into 50k is considered a huge win.

Some people have also come to the platform’s defense. Ansem’s take is that this is a place for catching trends like those on TikTok, and that jumping in and out quickly is the norm.

My take: Pump.fun has solved the problem of ā€œhow to launch a coin,ā€ but not ā€œhow to find a good coin.ā€ When the barrier to entry is low, supply is unlimited—but attention is limited. The result is that most coins don’t survive 24 hours. In this kind of environment, it’s not about having a good eye; it’s about being fast. And retail traders can’t compete with bots on speed.

If you want to play, keep at least three things in mind: use a small position, set slippage, and don’t chase coins that KOLs have already shilled.

Are you still aping into new Pump.fun coins? Did you make or lose money on your most recent one?
