🧯 AI giants’ “default insurance” is booming—should crypto be paying closer attention?
A recent, easy-to-miss but pretty important data point:
🔹 Trading volume in credit default swaps (CDS) for companies like Nvidia, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Oracle topped $9 billion a week in September, up from less than $2 billion in July
🔹 AI-related bond issuance this year has totaled about $466 billion—more than four times last year’s pace
🔹 Some analysts have compared the sale of data center debt to pension funds and endowments to 2008. Others say it’s simply smart money hedging, while investors are still buying tech stocks
Put simply, a CDS is insurance against someone failing to repay their debt. More buyers don’t necessarily mean something is about to go wrong, but it does show that big investors are starting to weigh the risks of the AI borrowing boom.
My take: BTC and the Nasdaq have been closely linked in recent years, and AI is the biggest story in U.S. stocks. If the AI credit market starts to wobble, the assets most likely to lose liquidity first are usually the high-volatility ones—and crypto would be hard to shield from that. On the other hand, if it’s just hedging and nothing happens, then that concern is simply an “insurance premium.”
So I’m not going to panic-sell my crypto over this, but I will dial back leverage a bit and keep a closer eye on sentiment around U.S. tech stocks and Treasuries.
Do you think AI debt is the next risk—or is this another case of crying wolf? Let’s talk in the comments 👇
