The money really did flow in, but the market just won't give it any credit. This may be the most frustrating scene in crypto lately. 📉

U.S. spot BTC ETFs saw net inflows of $527 million in a single day, the highest in nearly a month. BlackRock’s IBIT alone took in $665 million. You’d think an injection of cash this big would send prices soaring, right? But BTC slid all the way from above $83,000 to around $81,400, while Ethereum ETFs fared even worse, suffering continued outflows. Plenty of traders watching the charts must be scratching their heads: where did all that buying go?

The thing is, the data isn’t lying. It’s just that this money coming in is nothing like the “price-pumping capital” we imagine it to be.

First, you need to understand how these Wall Street players operate. A sizable share of current ETF net inflows comes from delta-neutral cash-and-carry strategies. Put simply, they buy spot ETFs while opening short positions in the futures market. They make money from the spread between the two (the basis), and don’t really care whether BTC goes up or down today. So while the books show dramatic “net inflows,” they’re not creating one-way buying pressure in the market.

Second, macroeconomic headwinds are simply too strong. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is now above 5%. With risk-free returns looking this attractive, why would big investors rush into highly volatile assets and take a gamble? Institutional risk managers have to run the numbers, too.

Then there’s the real selling pressure from fundamentals: miners are facing high costs after the halving, and every price drop brings more spot selling.

So for now, ETFs are acting more like a sponge, quietly absorbing that selling pressure, rather than a rocket booster. Don’t equate “inflows” with “a huge price surge.” The pipes are connected and the reservoir is filling up, but the pressure isn’t high enough for a breakout yet. Big money is gradually taking circulating supply off the market at the bottom. It’s a long, patience-testing process—but once you understand that, you won’t sigh at the sight of this green bar.
