BlackRock’s Proposed Bitcoin ETF Will Not Hold Bitcoin or Spot ETF Shares
BlackRock’s PBIT filing proposes holding options and fixed-income instruments without directly owning Bitcoin or spot Bitcoin ETPs. Dealer hedging activity could create indirect spot demand, depending on how counterparties hedge their positions. PBIT assets, IBIT creation activity, and options positions are key metrics to monitor.
BlackRock filed an application with the SEC on Oct. 19 for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), a fund that would hold options and fixed-income securities and gain exposure to Bitcoin through derivatives. The preliminary prospectus excludes direct ownership of Bitcoin and spot Bitcoin ETPs. The securities may not be sold until the registration statement becomes effective.
