META Earnings

Key takeaway: Advertising is accelerating, while the market’s confidence in capital expenditure discipline is losing momentum. The GAAP “earnings miss” is noise; the silence on 2027 is the signal.

No cracks in advertising: Total revenue was $51.242 billion, up 26% year over year; ad revenue was $50.08 billion, up 25.6%. Impressions rose 14% and price per ad rose 10%—both volume and pricing are up.

GAAP is accounting noise: Net income was $2.709 billion, down 83% year over year, with EPS of $1.05. The main reason was a one-time, non-cash tax expense of $15.93 billion, which pushed the tax rate to 87%. Excluding this, net income was $18.64 billion, EPS was $7.25, and earnings were up 20% year over year, above consensus. Operating margin was 40.1%.

Spending is the real blow: 2025 capex guidance is $70–72 billion; 2026 is projected at $115–135 billion, nearly double. Q3 FCF was $10.625 billion, down 32% year over year, but still positive. Cash was $44.5 billion and debt was $28.8 billion, so the balance sheet is not in crisis. But management refused to provide a 2027 capex anchor, while Guggenheim has independently raised its estimate to $225 billion.

Muse is an option, not a cash flow stream: Downloads have topped 5.6 million, but retention has yet to break through its bottleneck. The baseline monthly service cost per user is $37, or $445 a year—already far above global ARPU of about $70. Monetization at scale is unlikely before 2027–2028.

$METAB The market voted with its price: After the earnings report, shares closed down 9.53% at $680.02, on volume of about 12 million shares (versus an average of 6.5 million). Support at $717.20 was breached; $680 is a level to watch in the short term.

In a nutshell: The advertising beat was priced in as “what was expected”; accelerating capex and the lack of visibility for 2027 were priced in as “unacceptable.”
