The Bank of Japan (BOJ) will assess at next week’s policy meeting whether underlying inflation has reached its 2% target, according to sources familiar with the matter, who disclosed the information on Oct. 21.
If the BOJ confirms that the target has been achieved, it would be a symbolic turning point, marking a shift away from the monetary policy stance the bank has long maintained to combat deflation.
The BOJ set its 2% inflation target in January 2013. Despite implementing an aggressive monetary easing program, the bank repeatedly pushed back its projected timeline for achieving the target. If confirmed at its next meeting, the process will have taken nearly 14 years.
